At EK3O a.m. the reading was 59.8 degrees, at noon it had risen to .74.6 degrees, at SAS it reached its maximum of- 86 5 degrees, and at 5 p.m. it was 84.7 or equal to the previous highest reading this summer. The consequence m that after sweltering in the offices and iactories during the heat of the -afternoon, thousands-.of young people took the first opportunity of rushing to the swimming baths and seaside beaches to cool off.
At the municipal tepid baths the rush of patrons was the greatest that has been experienced for several years. On Tuesday evening mixed bathing is allowed, and before the baths opened last night there was a large crowd of young people of both sexes awaiting admission. By. 7 o'clock the accommodation was taxed to its utmost capacity, with the result that for the iirst time this summer the sign "bath full" had to bo displayed and the doors locked to latecomers.
At the. picture theatres last night the men patrons found it so warm that many of them decided to .doff their coats.
