Though hitherto the Press-.has" refrained from much comment on the langtse situation, the leading papers are now expressing sympathy with Britain, whose perseverance and fortitude -displayed at Hankow and Kiukiang are highly praised and considered to reflect British wisdom.
Iho "Asahi,"- which reflects the general attitude of the vernaculars, urges the Cantonese to exercise more selfcontrol, warning them that otherwise they will bring about a united action ol the Powers again China, with the result of Canton ultimately losing everything gained. ■
