ZANE GREY'S YACHT
A' SERVICEABLE CRAFT.
Zane Grey's yacht, the Fisherman, a graceful, white-hulled schooner with three tall masts, arrived at Auckland on Friday morning, and throughout, the day. attracted a;lot of attention as she. lay at anchor off Stanley Point. . '■;. ■■-. Although her lines are graceful, there is no doubt that utility was most in the builder's mind when she was launched at Ward's Brook, Nova Scotia, in 1919. Her principal measure--merits are: Length,. 134 ft, beam 35ft, and draught lift. -Tinder her original name of Marshal Foch she traded .across .the Atlantic; and has one record voyage to her credit.-" On coming into Mr. Grey's hands she was renamed, twin 60 h.p. engines were installed, and' she was refitted to make a comfortable floating home. '' . ■ ; ■
The Fisherman (states the "Auckland Star") is carrying all the-equip-ment necessary for an extended fishing trip. In addition to a lifeboat and two ship's boats on board there are ' two skiffs and' four power launches, two being sharp-bowed and fast, to develop the high speed that will' be necessary when sbme of the North Auckland niakos and swordfish get up pace. The furnishings of the Fisherman- are on. plain and homely lines, though everything is up to date, including a high.-powered;- wireless set, which kept touch.\vith.~th~e world, throughout the" voyage, a refrigerator, ice-making: plant, darkroom^ for cinematograph work, electric light, and auxiliary engines for providing the necessary power for the hoisting of sails.and the lifting of anchors.- The Fisherman's main engines give her a. speed -of about seven knots in calm water, but the vessel for .her:: size has a tremendous sail-, spread, and when winds are favourable she is a sailer in every sense of the word. -.. As is usual with the square-countered type of craft built in the Canadian marine provinces, the Fisherman has a roomy deckhouse just forwari 1. of amidships, while, since her conversion from a trade?, the whole of the room-below the main deck, with the exception of a very roomy engine-room, has been remodelled to provide accommodation for those on board, the crew being housed in specious surroundings forward. One cabin is packed ,with fishing gear, while stowed on top of one- of the launches, and, looking somewhat out of its element, is a motor-car. ' ' The officers of the-Fisherman are-— Captain F. K. Klebingat; first officer, ■Mr. E. A. Aderman; second officer,' Mr. B. L. Anderson; chief engineer, Mr Gr' ; Quodly; first, Mr. L. E. M'Call; second! Mr. E. Mitchell; wireless operator, Mr W. Zind. ■ . The Fisherman will remain at anchor :in Auckland Harbour until "the arrival of Mn.Zane Grey and his fishing party.
