TWO NEW SCHOOLS
AT LOWER HUTT AND ISLAND BAY
OTHER ADDITIONS AUTHOBISED.
In accordance with authority received from the Education Department, the "Wellington Education Board has accepted the tender of Mr. H. Storey for tho erection of the first block of six rooms of a school to serve the southeast part of Lower Hutt. The school will be erected on a beautiful site of over four acres, situated in one block within the angle formed by White's Line and Waiwetu road, near the railway station and adjacent to tho meeting place of many roads. Pending the erection of another school nearer the racecourse this school will serve the new population of the southern area and also ease the Eastern Hutt School, v?hich is now overcrowded
An important purchase has this week been effected by the boaid, under authority from the Government, of 2 acres 2 roods 18 perches, immediately to the south of and adjoining Wakefield Park, for a second school for Island Bay. The site is bounded by the Parade, Doe and Eden streets, and is about three-fourths flat. This purchase solves a somewhat knotty problera, as for some timb it has been evident that the improved transport facilities now existing would attract a population much too large to' be served by one school. It would probably have been better if a large enough site could have been pro ared near the • water front, but Island Bay is, by reason of the cup-like configuration, a very compact community, and, with proper local arrangements for admission, it should be possible to avoid long-distance transit for any pupil. The site selected possesses the immense advantage of a municipal sports ground ready for 500 youngsters immediately adjoining. For the temporary accommodation of the surplus numbers at the present school suitable temporary arrangements have been made, pending the erection of a school.
To meet the growth of population of Seatoun the board has let a contract to Mr. J. W.'Hay for the erection of an additional room at the Seatoun School.
As the tenders for the addition of a room in brick to the main building, South Miramar, were considered too high, the board will shortly erect the room by direct labour.
The new school at Pukerua Bay is approaching completion.
