"YEOMEN OF THE GUARD"

A POLISHED PERFORMANCE.

Of all the collaborations of W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, not one reaches such operatic heights as "The Yeoman of the Guard." From a dramatic paint of view the opera, with its deep underlying pathos, stands alone, and it has always been a. general favourite with the public. Yesterday's audiences at the Grand Opera House fully appreciated the two performances, the J. C. Williamson Company doing full justice t« the production. Indeed, it would be hard to find a more balanced performance than that presented, and one left the theatre with the feeling that in few ways could the performance have been, bettered. The brunt of tne work, of course, falls on the Jester, Jack Point, and on Wilfred, the Head Gaoler. Mr. Charles Walenn and Mr. John Ralston both, acquit themselves with honours in these two roles. Mr. James Hay greatly delighted with his polished performance as the elusive Colonel Fairfax, his singing being one of the features of the performance. Miss Strella Wilson, as Elsie Maynard, sings charmingly, and is ably supported by the minor characters. A word of prais* is due to the chorus, who, besides singing well, take an active interest in what is going on. This evening the company will be seen in "lolanthe," on Friday in "H.M.B. Pinafore" and "Trial by Jury." Saturday (afternoon and evening) in "The Mikado,' and on Monday next in "The Pirates of Penzance." '
