"MISSED HIS SHIP"
NEW ARRIVAL'S FRAUD.
Stating that he was James Smith, of the Arawa, and tha.t he had missed his ship and wished to rejoin .her at Lyttelfon, Robert M'Laren, a labourer, aged 19, went to the office of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion, Company' yesterday and obtained a free ticket South and 10s in cash for incidental expenses. He then went on board the Janie Seddon and stole toilet articles and clothing worth £1 15s 6d, the property of members of the crew..
In the meantime the shipping company communicated with, the captain of the Arawa, and found that there was no James Smith in the: crew. Police investigations followed, and M'Laren 'was arrested. He" pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court to-day to obtaining a ticket and 10s- in money by false pretences and to two charges of theft. M'Laren, who had1 been in New Zealand only a few weokß, was remanded by Mr. E. Page, S.M., to appear for sentence tomorrow.
