IMPRESSION OF JAPAN

ENTHUSIASM' FOE EESEAECH.

(Eeceivcd 14th Decembor, 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day.

' Professor Macmillan Brown has arrived at Sydnoy from Japan, whero he attended the Pan-Pacific Congress. He paid a warm tribute to tho hospitality of the Japanese, and said that ho had novor seen a congress so well organised. Many interesting entertainments and excursions woro arranged. He considered that tho congress had been oxtromely successful, though it had the disadvantage of being arranged in sections, so that everyone had to choose only tho section in which ho was interested. Tho Professor read a paper on the relationship of the Polynesians and thoir language to tho Ainus, tho primitivo inhabitants of Japan, and their language and to the Indo-European language. He showed that the first three numerals of the Polynesian and Ainu languages were, tho same as the first three numerals of tho Indo-Euro-pean language., His conclusion was that Polynesian was the most primeval form qf tho Indo-European language. This striking hypothesis greatly interested tho delegates to the congress. Professor Brown added that the Japanese Government was a remarkable example of Socialism, for it managed everything. All the foreign scientists at the congress were struck by the j extraordinary enthusiasm in Japan for research, which was eagerly taken up i by young men.
