AT TE AWAMUTU

PHAOLA WINS CUP. GREEN BONNET TO THE FORE. (By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") TE AWAMUTU, This Day. The Waipa Racing Club's Meeting was held at Te Awaniutu to-day in fine weather and before a good attendance. The To Awainutu Cup was a splendid race, the three-year-old filly Phaola winning narrowly from Te K..ja, who made many friends for the Auckland Cup by his display. There were several inquiries. For crossing Tall Timber in the straight in the Kihikihi Handicap, the winner, Flying Juliet, was placed second, and the race was awarded to Tall Timber, wlio finished second. Flying Juliet's rider, A. Driscoll, was stood down foi: tho remainder of the day. The connections of Scat were before the Judicial Committee in connection with that horse's running in the Kihikihi Handicap. While not entirely satisfied with the handling of the horse, the committee decided to take no action. ,The falling of Elniestra in the Waipa Plate was found to be accidental. Tha totalisator handled £24,427 10s, as compared with £28,686 for last year. PIRONGIA HURDLES. Cureafonn'was a good favourite for the Pirongia Hurdles, with Highflown the second choice, and the winner, Gold Rep, at a lair price. Aairere was the early leader, but Pendennis and Highliown were jn front passing the stand, and they led along the back from Sea Comet and Gold Rep, who had run up from the rear, while Tres Bon, Zanna, and Cureafonn were also handy. Gold Rep ran to ihe front Bearing the turn, and her rider making every post a winner, she scored by a length, and a half from Pendennis, who defeated Highflown by a length. Sea Comet was fourth, followed by West Abbey and Cureafonn, who was sore, Greekson, and Treg Bon. Highflown made a good showing- for a first run over hurdles, and should be worth keeping in mind. KIHIKIHI HANDICAP. Tall Timber was a pronounced favourite for the Kihikihi Handicap. Miss Vera was also well backed, and Flying Juliet fairly supported. Flying Juliet began .first, to be quickly joined by Joy Germ, and the pair led along the back several lengths clear of Tall Timber and Miss Vera, who were clear of Scat. The positions were unchanged crossing Tie top, but Tall Timber was closing up nearing the turn. Once into the straight Tall Timber tried to come through on the rails, but was checked by Flying Juliet and had to be pulled out. Flying Juliet then came on to beat Tall Timber by threeparts of a length, with the fast-finishing , Barometer three lengths away third. Scat, who will improve, was fourth, followed by Miss Vera, Joy Germ, and Royal Box. The Judicial Committee held an inquiry into the crossing that took place in tho straight, and decided to reverse the placings, Tall Timber being- placed first and Flying Juliet second. WAIPA PLATE. The bracket, Abbey Day and Tea Leaf, was most in demand for the Waipa Plate, with the bracket, Ateriria and Rose Swift, second in request. Mervette caught the tapes at the start and a number of horses on tile outside were interfered with. Cantab was first out, and when they settled down was leading- from Shanks, Tea Leaf, Day Guide, and Day Rose. Ateriria made a run across the top, and he was handy to Cantab and Tea Leaf rounding the bend. Alteriria finished well under pressure, and won by half a length from: Cantab, who beat Tea Leaf by three-parts of a length.. Wiltshire was a poor fourth, followed by Abbey Day, Ballachulish, Day Guide, and Royal Day. Ateriria recorded a nice performance, as he was not too well placed early, and appeared to jump Elmestra, who fell in the early stages. TE AWAMUTU CUP. The Te Awamutu Cup was a good bet ting race, Gala Day being favourite, with T« Kara and Delightmeni also heavily supported. Hyde Park led along the back from Curraghmore, Gala Day,' and Gold Jacket, while- Te Kara was moving up, Star Ranger and Lord Star being last in that order. The field, with the exception of Lord Star, bunched crossing the top, Hj'de Park leading into the straight, just ahead of Curraghmore, with Delightment, Phaola, Gold Jacket, Gala Day, and Te Kara in a bunch. The last-named was on the rails. The field spread across the course in the straight, and a splendid race resulted in Phaola winning by a neck from Te Kara, who defeated Hyde Park by a length. Star Ranger, who was in on the rails behind the bunch Hearing the turn, finished well or. the outside in fourth position, and then came Gala Day, v Dolightment, Curraghmore, and Gold Jacket.
