FIRES EXTINGUISHED
WORK FOR IDLE MINERS
GDMPLETING THE FLOODING.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
GREYMOUTH, This Day. At the outlet of the Dobson mine there iH a strong smell of Bmoke and charred timber from the fires that previously raged, and blackened the doors and woodwork of the fan house and the cliffs in the vicinity, but this morning all other sign of burning had disappeared. The last wisp of smoko curled übovo the fun shaft last night. Although the iircs within have apparently been extinguished, water is still being pumped into a pool at the entrance to the mine, and runs through the dark passage into the inner recesses of the mine to complete the flooding. This is to ensure that there is no smouldering coal to be fanned again into fire should the water be drawn off and a draught from the entrance to the dip be created. All the water will be left standing for twenty-four hours. The work of emptying will then begin and it is expected to last several weeks.
The manager of the Eoa mine, Mr. O'Donncll, lias arranged to give employment to a considerable number of idle miners, while twenty are going to the State mine. The Wallsend mine may also take i number.
Ac, the request of a deputation from the Union, the Greymouth Borough Council is to ask the Minister of Mines on Saturday for a vote for road work to employ miners for a few weeks. A donation of £20 for the relief fund was received from Bishop Brodie, of Christchurch, and this brings the total up to £400.
