BURGLARS AT WORK

ATTEMPTS IN CHRISTCHURCH

LITTLE FOR THE MARAUDERS.

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

CHEISTCHUKCH, This Day.

Attempts have been made to enter a number of business premises in the city during last week, and it is evident that burglars have beeu operating, although their efforts have not always met with' buccess.

Tho lock on the front door of the premises of H. W. Bullivanfc anil Co., printers, in Armagh street, refused to give when the burglars made au attempt on Wednesday night to break into the office. L.ast Friday night burglars entered the premises of Combined Buyers, Ltd., in Oxford terrace. They burst open the front door with a jemmy, and leveret the lock from tho door of the office of Merchant Traders, upstairs, but in this caso, too, the intruders left empty-handed. . A The burglars, who attemptedito enter the premises of H. Vale and CM plumbers, in. Armagh street, on Wednesday night, were frustrated, due to the resistance of the lock of the front door. When Mr. H. Laban, of Colombo street, arrived at his shop yesterday, he discovered that an attempt had been made on the previous night ho enter his pre-, mises. The burglars had used a jemmy on the door, but, whether the wouldbe intruders had found the lock too good for them, or whether they were disturbed, they failed to gain admittance.

Last Friday the premises of the Electric Storage Battery Co., 169, Armagh street, were entered, and a watch and a number of tools were stolen. A jemmy was. used on the front door. Burglars on Wednesday night broke into the Canterbury Jockey Club's offices in Oxford terrace. They prised open the desk in the secretary's room, but found nothing, and left emptyhanded.
