CHKISTCHURCH, This Day.

Afire which originated in some shavings at the rear of the premises caused severe damage to the property of Staniland, Ltd., salt, spice, and coffee ncrchants, in Moorhouse avenue, yesterday afternoon. The building was practically destroyed, and the machinery damaged, while there was a serious loss ot! stock. When the brigade arrived, the floor boards of the wool stores of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency, next door, were burning, but the outbreak was extinguished in. an incipient stage. The insurances on the stock and machinery total £3100, and the building is insured for £500. Both policies are with the Southern Union.
