HISTORY OF THE MINE

PROMISING DEVELOPMENT.

The Dobson mine is situated within a few miles of Greymouth, and is a comparatively recent mine. It is practically on the same seam as the Brunner mine, which is about a mile distant on tho other side of the Grey River. Records show that the first output was 2774 tons, made in 1921, and the mine was then owned by the Dobson Coal Company. In 1923, boring operations wore in progress, and the following year work in the mine was recommenced. In 1924, 4287 tons were mined, but the' output was nearly trebled last year, when the quantity of coal mined totalled 12,268 tons. Up to the 31st December last year the total output for the mine was 16,555 tons. At that time 75 men were employed at the mine, 32 above ground and 43 below. The mine is at present owned by the Grey Valley Collieries, Ltd., whose head office is at Christchurch.
