MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Police and summons cases were dealt with in the Magistrate's Court to-day by Mr. E. Page, S.M. With thirty-four previous convictions to his discredit, some of them for theft, William Gordon, aged 35, pleaded guilty to stealing three pounds of tobacco from the shop of Mrs. Susan Chamberlain, at '107, Taranaki street. Chief-Detective Ward stated that the tobacco was taken while Mrs. Chamberlain was at the back of the shop. Gordon, when interviewed by a constable, admitted the treft. A sentence of one mo|ith 's imprisonment, with hard labour, was imposed.! Two charges of theft of silk stockings and ladies' underwear, of a total value of £3 4s 9d, were admitted by a married woman, aged 30. ChiefDetective Ward told tin Court that the accused had taken the articles from the shop of Mrs. Eleanor May Cox, by whom she was employed. Her previous character had been good. The' Magistrate ordered the accused to come up for sentence when called upon within twelve months. On a charge of stealing an overcoat and scarf, valued at £6, and belonging to James William Eoper, Georga William Harris, a cook, aged 42, was remanded to appear to-morrow. Charles Lamb, who failed to take the proper precautions when approaching the Waikanae level-crossing in a motorcar, was fined £3. and costs. For his second offence of drunkenness, William John Hay, a labourer, aged 50, was fined 10s, in default fortyeight hours' imrisonment. One first offender was convicted and discharged. A. Murdoch was fined £10 for using an uncertificated lift. The Inspector of Machinery said that Murdoch had been twice warned not to use the lift for his business, but bad apparently taken no notice. A penalty of £1 was imposed on Mrs. Grace Maybury, a confectioner, who failed to close her shop at the proper time on a holiday. For failing to keep a proper wages and overtime book, Barraclough and Avery, tailors, were fined £1. Failure to have tha interior of his bakehouse cleaned with limewash every six months cost J. A. Shears £2 in the shape of a fine.
A fifth offender for drunkenness, Joseph Johnston, was fined £1, in default forty-eight hours' imprisonment, by Mr. J. A. M'Grath, J.P., at the Mount Cook Police Court this morning.
