The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice and Defence'(the Hon. F. J. Rolleston) returned from the South Island this morning. The Minister of Internal Affairs (tho Hon. R. F. Bollard) will leave for Piilmcrston North by the Limited express to-night. While in the Mauawatu district he will visit Flock House, in company with the Hon. E. Newman, M.L.C., and Mr. F. F. Hockly, M.P. Sir John Luke, M.P. for Wellington North, left for the North last night. Mr. W. Appleton, of Wellington, returned from a visit to Sydney to-day. Mr. L. Beale, His Majesty's Trade Commissioner, left Wellington last night on an official visit to Dunedin. fen- James Allen, who is at present in the South, will return to Wellington on Thursday morning. Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P. for Patea, is in Welling! on on business connected with his electorate. The Rev. F. E. Harry, of the Vivian Street Baptist Church, leaves by the Tahiti to-night on a brief visit to Australia. Mr. W. Donovan, first assistant at the Dominion Laboratory, who has been on an extended tour of Canada, England, and the Continent, returned to Wellington to-day. i A passenger by the Marama from Sydney to-day was Dr. Dv Reitz, of Sweden, a professor of botany, who is j visiting New Zealand and the South Soa Islands in connection with botanical work. | Mr. L. A. J. Lonergan, manager of j Messrs. A. Hatrick and Co., Ltd., left by the Main Trunk Limited last evening for Auckland, whero he will connect with the R.M.S. Aorangi, sailing for Vancouver on Tuesday next. Mr. Lonergan is going on an extended business trip to the United States. He will also represent the New Zealand motor trade at the Third World's Motor Congress to be held in New York in January next. Prior to his departure from Wellington Mr. Lonergan received many valuable gifts from tho executive and staff of A. Hatrick and Co., Ltd. Canon J. C. Eceles, who died at Auckland on Friday, aged 86, was prominently connected with the pioneer days of the Church of England in the Southern Hawkes Bay district. Arriving from Ireland at a comparatively early age, the late canon was a student at St. John's College. He was ordained deacon in 1874, and priest in 1877, in which year he was appointed vicar of Waipawa. In those days Waipawa was a scattered settlement, and the vicar's charge extended as far south as the Manawatu. Gorge. In 1892 Canon Eceles was appointed vicar of Woodville, and was later made Canon of Woodville. He was one of tho original canons of the Waiapu diocese. Ho also did valuable work in organising the home mission fund in the diocese. The canon retired in 1919 and wont to Auckland. He had been ill for some time and his death was not unexpected. Canon Eceles is survived by Mrs. Eceles and two sons.

Mr. Alexander Ferguson, who died at Christchurch on Saturday morning, was for thirty-two years manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, Christchurch. He was born in 1849, in Scotland, and was oducated at the Tain Academy. For three years he served in the British Linen Company's Bank at Tain, Scotland, and later he removed to London, where he joined the staff of the Oriental Bank Corporation. Some years later Mr. Ferguson had .some experience in the world of commerce in Liverpool, but in 1873 he joined tho staff of the National Bank of New Zealand in London. Four years after joining the bank, the late Mr. Ferguson was transferred to New Zealand, and a year after his arrival in the Dominion he was appointed manager of the bank's branch at Balclntha. Two years later ho was transferred in a similar capacity to Timaru. In 1885 the late Mr. Ferguson was appointed manager of the bank in Christchurch, and held tho position until his retirement.
