VARSITY AND MIDLAND.

With a lead of 79 runs ancf' six wickets '.n hand, University were in a strong position against Midland, largely as the result of another fine batting display by Boilings, and splendid help from Tripe. The match was resumed on No. 2 wicket at the Basin Reserve. Hollings (106) and Mackenzie (4) were the not-out batsmen on i the previous Saturday, and they con-tinued--their strike. Mackenzie w*u soon disposed of, being caught off J. .Hatchings before any further score had' been recorded. Wilson was next, and for a time play was quiet. Gradually the batsmen became more at home, and 'Varsity's total was Bent along by a number of good boundary shots, as well as by strokes of lesser value. When the total had reached 250 Wilson Idet his wicket, Baker making a catch in the slips. Wilson batted well for 25. Arndt failed tp stay, and with only two more runs added Ham was stumped. Just previously Hollings had offered a possible catch, but he carried on confidently and by forceful driving increased the score. At 266 Mackay went out Ibw, and when the last man (Vietmeyer) was at the crease Hollings was beaten by J. Hutchings, the innings closing for 268. Hollings had played quite well in adding 29 runs to his score of 106 on the previous Saturday, and his performance received well-merited applause. Hutchings and Judd were the most successful bowlers for Midland, each getting four wickets. Although Midland. l\ad no prospect o£ victory, it was expected that they would make amends for their poor display in the first innings. Once again, however, they fared badly. Dind was dismissed before scoring, Patrick went when the total was 10, and Baker followed

at 75. Doncglme set out to improve tlic position, and micceeiled to some extent, scoring 20 before losing his wicket. Ox the remaining batsmen J. Hutchmgs clicl best; in fact, he was the pick of the Midland batsmen' for the match.
