SIX HOURS' LIBERTY
THREE YOUTHS FROM BORSTAL INSTITUTE.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)' INVERCARGILL, 21st November. About 2 p.m. on Saturday three youthful inmates of the Borstal Institute escaped. They had been working with a gang under the charge of a warder, and disappeared into the undergrowth. Their movements were traced northward until they reached Makarewa River. _ At one stage the escapees entered a dwelling-house and, it is alleged, stole a quantity of food and a carving knife, which one of them was carrying when they were recaptured early in the evening. They were seen by Constable Fraser and a party of warders near the river bank. The constable gave chase and drove one of them into the water, where he was taken in charge by the warders. The others then set oft up the bank, but were soon intercepted by Constable Fraser, who had made a detour across high ground. The escapees were returned to the Borstal Institution after about six hours of freedom.
