PRISONERS ESCAPE
ONE BREAKS A LEG
ANOTHER RECAPTURED AFTER STRUGGLE.
(Received 22nd November, 2 p.m.) HOBART, This Day. The police are scouring the country for two out of four desperate criminals who escaped from Hobart Gaol on Sunday afternoon. The fourth escapee, in jumping from the prison wall, broke a. leg and was recaptured. The men, with other prisoners, were attending a Salvation Army meeting in the exercise yard, aad were not missed till a'boy informed the police that he had seen three prisoners running along the street. It is supposed that the prisoners took advantage of the meeting to evade the guard, scale, tho prison buildings, and then drop from awall 14 feet high. An armed party of police recaptured one of the escapees, Downs, a long-sen-tence man, five miles from the oity._ He refused to surrender and invited the police to fire, but he was overpowered after a struggle. Two, in hiding near, managed to elude the police.
