CLASHING OF DATES

AUCKLAND AND TARANAKI . TENNIS TOURNEYS. '

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

AUCKLAND, This Day.

There are murmurings of discontent in Taranaki tennis circles at the receipt of the news that the Auckland championships have been fixed for 3rd to 6th January. The dates last season were 27th to 30th January, but, with a desire to attract entries from players competing at the New Zealand championship meeting to be held during the last week in December, the Auckland association has decided to advance its dates this season.

Taranaki's grievance arises from the fact that its tournament has always proved very attractive to Aucklanders, and most of the leading players visit New Plymouth the tournament which, in recent "y°ar . has been held in the first week iv January. Taranaki's dates on' this occasion are 4th to Bth January, and these clash with those recently adopted after some discussion by Auckland.

It seeks likely, therefore, that the Taranaki tournament will be seriously affected. Tho position is a difficult one, and cannot now be remedied. Taranaki and Auckland have co-oper-ated most' amicably in the past, and it will be a matter for regret if the clashing of the dates sows the seeds of dissension. The real remedy seems to be in the New Zealand Association exercising more control in. the fixing of dates, as the associations know almost nothing of one another's intentions until the fixtures are confirmed and published. x
