NEW ANAESTHETIC
Ethylene, as an anaethetic, on which the British Medical Besoarch Council commented favourablj' in their last annual report, has been used with success at Manchester. The value of the drug, which, used in this capacity, is an American discovery, has recently been demonstrated by one of tho chief anacthetists at the Manchester Boyal Infirmary, where it proved so successful that when it is available in sufficient quantities it is expected that it will take a recognised place beside the more generally known anaesthetics. Among the advantages claimed for it aro that it is equally effective for short periods of insensibility, such as teeth extraction, or prolonged operations, and has the advantage of leaving no disagreeable after effects. The patient recovers full consciousness within a few minutes, instead of remaining in a dazed condition for several hours. There is also none of the distressing aftersickness which is sometimes an accompaniment of the anaesthetics at present in use, and no struggling during the early stages of anaesthesia.
