MARANUI SURF AND LIFESAVING CLUB
There was a large crowd present at tlie Maranui Clubhouse on Saturday on the occasion of the opening of the season. Amongst those present were Mr. i l. M. Bundle, chairman of the Wellington Swimming Centre, the Hon. R. A. Wright, and Mr. T. Queree, president. The.members paraded on the bench, and were addressed by the presideut, who , congratulated the1 club, on its splendid successes during the past season, including the winning of the New Zealand life-saving championship and the Wellington champion flying squadron team. The club teams had also been instrumental during the Christmas holidays, in conjunction with the Lyall Bay Club, in rescuing some twelve people from drowning. It wag vitally necessary that all the club members should work hard to keep up this fine work. Great preparations were being made for the increased efficiency of the club during the coming season. Mr. R. Smith had been elected swimming coach, and was conducting regular classes at the batha, and the secretary (Mr. f. Chapman) was endeavouring to arrange a tour of the club team afterthe life-saving championships at New Plymouth. All this showed great enterprise on behalf of the chib, and it gave him great pleasure to wish the club every success and declared the season open. The Hon. R. A. Wright endorsed the presidents remarks, and stated that the valuable work done by the life-savers was very much appreciated by the public and by the Government. He wished the club every success during the coining season. Competitions for the Queree and Stellin Cups (senior and junior four men reel, alarm rescues) were then held, and resulted in a win for J. Slecman's senior team ami h. Hughes s junior team. Afternoon tea was served in the clubhouse by the Ladies' Committee, and was much enjoyed by all. A social was held during the evenin'" for club members and friends. J
