SUBURBAN BUSES
QUESTION OF LICENSES DISSATISFACTION AT PETONE. At last night's meeting of the Petone Borough Council a reply was received from the Town Clerk, Wellington, to the council's request that the applications for bus licenses coming before the city bylaws be enumerated, stating that only lack of time had prevented this being done in the past. The council endorsed the protest made by the Mayor of Lower Hutt against the method in which the representations of the Petone and Lower Hutt Councils were received by the City Council in regard to the licensing of motor buses in the Hutt district. Councillor Cook pointed out that in his opinion the council was not adequately represented; Petone, Lower Hutt, Eastbourne, and other places only ono representative between them. Mr. H. Ingham asked the council to support his application for bus licenses for a Lower Hutt-Petone-Wellington service. Councillor Jacobson moved that the council support the-' application. The present bus proprietors had now a monopoly, and this was not advisable. It could not be said that the present services were adequate. Councillors Campbell, Scholefield, and Edwards endorsed the application. Councillor Cook said that the present proprietors would not be allowed to extend their services, and he did not think the motion would be of much use. The motion was carried. UNDER WHAT AUTHORITY? The. deputy-Mayor pointed out that the Wellington City Council was now running buses on Sundays into the Hutt Valley. He did not know under what authority this was being done. ' . Tho Eastbourne Borough Council asked if the Petone Council would consent to the Eastbourne Council running motor-buses through Petone. On the motion of Councillor Jay, consent was given the Eastbourne Council to consult with the Petone traffic inspector in regard to routes.
