POLICE AND PRISONERS
GUN FIGHT IN NEW YORK GAOL.
(United Press Association.—Copyright.) NEW YORK, 3rd November. Three persons were killed and two mortally injured as the result of an attempt to deliver three prisoners from The Tombs, the historic city prison. Two hundred policemen, detectives, and prison guards engaged in a fusilade from vantage points, picking off prisoners trapped like rats within the prison yard. Five hundred spectators watched the bloodshed from tall buildings which front three sides of the courtyard. i The prisoners had announced that ; they must see the warden regarding | medical attention. They were taken j from the cells and left in charge of one guard. They then produced guns, demanding that the guard open the door ; and let them out. The guard refused, and cried out for nid, and a warden arrived. The gunmen then opened fire on the warden and dashed into the yard, where they held out for several hours against the fire of the police, taking refuge behind a pile of coal, but finally the recalcitrants were brought down.
