AFTER THE RACE

BETTING SWINDLES ALLEGED

DEFRAUDING THE BOOKMAKERS,

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

NEW PLYMOUTH, 4th Nov. Allegations of a betting swindle on a large scale have been revived at Waitara. Some time ago proceedings were taken by 0. R. Ulander against James Telfar, plaintiff claiming £64 and alleging defendant's participation in a widespread systematic scheme to defraud bookmakers by making bets after the result of a race was known. Ulander's claim was discontinued after sensational allegations had been made. The latest development is the issue of a writ on behalf of Ernest Johnston, claiming £148 from Dennis George on the ground that defendant made a bet with plaintiff that the horse Our Jack would win a certain race on 10th July, and that at the time defendant knew that Our Jack had actually won the race. To-day another writ was filed on behalf of O. B. Ulander and P. J. Flannagan against James Telfar, claiming £62 on similar grounds. Claimants allege that they are taking proceedings not for personal gain, but as a protest against swindle. If the money is recovered it will be paid to any charity named by the Mayor of New Plymouth.
