SWIMMING

WELLINGTON CENTRE.

There was a large attendance of delegates at the annual meeting of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association last evening. Mr. P. N. Rundle presided. The annual report stressed the necessity of fostering inter-club competitions to bring out the keenness of swimmers. Such competitions had a material effect upou raising the general standard of swimming. In regard to the municipal tepid baths, it was stressed that unless adequate facilities were available to the community generally it could not be expected that the aims of the centre could be developed with any degree of success. "The health and physique of the community is of paramount importance, and as swimming has such a direct bearing upon these two attributes, it would be expected that the authorities would show their appreciation in a practical manner. This, however, has not been done, in spite of the repeated efforts of the centre and other interested public bodies. Wellington compares most unfavourably with other towns in New Zealand in this respect, and it can only be hoped that the Wellington City Council will soon realise the growing need for an establishment where the community can learn the arts of swimming and life-saving and indulge in them the whole year round." The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Dr. W. E. Herbert (reelected); vice-presidents, the Prime Miuister (the Right Hon. J. G. Coates), Hon. R. A. Wright, his Worship the Mayor (Mr. C. J. B. Norwood), Messrs. J. P. Maxwell, and I. Duncan; chairman, Mr. P. N. Rundle (re-elected); hon. secretary, Mr. R. Mason; hon. treasurer, Mr. W Look; delegate to N.Z.A'.A.A., Mr. B O'Neill; educational officer, Mr. F. Fisher; auditor, Mr. A. A. Somerville; handieapper, Mr. J. Calnan; executive committee, Messrs. Ralph, Smith, and P. Coira.
