CALEDONIAN FAIR

CARNIVAL SPIRIT AT THE TOWN HALL.

With the object of raising money for a permanent hall for the Caledonian Society, members of that body have organised a large three days' fair in the Town Hall, and last night the MayoV (Mr. C. J. B. Norwood), accompanied by Mrs. Norwood, declared the bazaar open. He was received by Chief R. H. Nimmo, with Mr. Mitchell, Mrs. Stuart Wilson, Mrs. M'Vicar, and Mrs. Clark. In introducing the Mayor, Mr. Nimmo thanked him for the interest he bad always taken, in the society, and expressed appreciation of the council's action in allowing the use of the Kilbirnie Reserve for a carnival which the society proposed to hold, also in aid of the building fund. His Worship wished the society every success with its effort, and stressed the splendid work it did in the community, especially by its co-operation with public bodies and in its immigration work. Mrs. Norwood was presented with a beautiful bouquet by DrumMajor Comrie Smith. Although all the stalls were well decorated and stocked and attracted many buyers, the side-shows are really the "attraction extraordinary" at the fair, many of them being quite new to Wellington, andt others well-known through the Dunedin Exhibition, and the bat games drew large crowds. Admission to the hall is free. Miss Farmer's string band was warmly applauded for its efforts last night, and this evening Mr. Joe Knowsley's pupils will present an attractive programme of dancing. The Scottish Pipe Band marched last night from Courtenay place to the hall, where it played in the Mayor and Mayoress. This evening the band will start from Veitch and Allan's, and to-morTOW night from the post office. Following is the list of stallholders:—Plain and fancy, Mesdames Smith, Stark, Clark, and Coy; ice cream and soft drinks, Misses Ewing, Farmer, and Stevenson; sweets, Me^ames Wright, London, Flett, Misses Watt and Coy; apron stall, Meadames Henderson, %att, and Wishart, Misses Duncan and Watt; miscellaneous, Mesdames Butcher, Mackay, and Miss Gilbertson; cakes, Mesdames Baudinet, Bollons, Miss Logan; books, Mesdames Bailey and Dunnett; produce, Mesdames Cooper ard Windsor; flowers, Mesdames Brown and M'Ganch; tea rooms, Mesdames Cleverley, Cummings, Kirkby. Mr. H. S. Hannah is the secretary of the fair.
