FIGURES FOR NINE MONTHS

SMALL EXCESS OF IMPORTS,

Exports for the nine months ended 30th September, 1926, amounted to £.37,346,920, and imports for the same period to £37,404,368, leaving a small excess of imports of £57,448. Figures for the corresponding period last year were: Exports, £44,191,254; imports, £38,234,807; balance in favour of exports, £5,956,447. Exports for the first nine months of the presenjt year, therefore, are down by £6,844.334, as compared with the total for the corresponding period in 1925. Imports, however, show a diminution of but £830,439. As explained in previous issues of the "Abstract of Statistics," the shrinkage in.exports is due to lower'pricey especially in the wool trade. For the nine months under review the return from wool exported was £10,544,711, as compared with £15,912,729 for the corTesj^nding period last year. Declines are also evident in the following main items (figures for corresponding period of 1925 ,in .parentheses): Butter, £5,----997,303 (£6,397,475); frozen beef, £488,952 (£647,085"); frozen lamb, £5,331,915 (£6,358,182); frozen mut ton, £1,903,013 (£2,409,075); sheep skins, £1,360,930 (£1,722,991); hides, £450,614 (£579,673). The principal increases were: Cheese, £4,636,960 (£4,106,431); sausage casings, £710,----418 (£619,884). In the case of imports the principal increases occurred in: Motor spirit, n.e.i., £1,692,392 (£1,347,107); boots and shoes, £753,395 (£702,845); bags and sacks, £441,873 (£327,490); flour, £290,784 (£92,489); lubricating oil, £228,660 (£178,708). Motor vehicles show a decline in value from £3,049,----087 to £2,792,778, although the number increased from 16,154 to 17,375. Other note j orthy decreases occurred in: Wheat, £513,318 (£745,935); sugar, £715,147 (£686,116); gasoline, £105,----026 (£297,150); railway and tramway plant, £169,586 (£430,733), sawn timber, £494,740 (£553,141); other timber, £99,939 (£381,706).
