Some Auckland merchants were concerned when it became known that the Napier line would be blocked for a considerable time by the slip in the Manawatu Gorge. Tho 'Railway Department has met its customers on generous lines, and is accepting goods for Hawkes Bay and adjacent districts to be sent via Wellington and tho Wairarapa, charging the same mileage as if the Gorge route was open.
