BACKED BILLS FOR WIFE.

(By Tslsgrsph.) (tptcial tt "Th# Evtnins Pttt") AUCKLAND, This Day. A fortnight ago the creditors of Mabel Lawrence, dressmaker, met, but owing to bankrupt's illness the meeting was adjourned. To-day when the creditors of Robert Dando,, bank clerk, assembled it transpired that Mabel Lawrence was his wife, and that he had backed bills for her which h 1 could not meet, his schedule Bhowing a deficiency of £949. Dando was first married in 1902, and up to n. few weeks ago had been a bank clerk with thirty years' service, leaving because a creditor had taken out a judgment summons against him. His salary averaged £390. He separated from his first wife in 1918. He agreed to pay 90s a week maintenance, but found the sum too much for him. He divorced her in 1922, and last year married Mabel Lawrence, The only creditor represented was Mrs. Muir, who paid. £400 in 1925 for a half-share in the new wife's business. Dando said he did not know what had become of the money or of £139 antepartnership debts collected. He did not know his wife's'real position. He met her at Whangaroi. He Was heavily in debt at the time of his second marriage, but his wife gave him to understand that she expected to realise £900 from the sale of the business. The Assignee: "The bankrupt has my sympathy. He's been a fool." No resolution was passed. Bankrupt said that he had paid £300 in contributions to the bank superannuation funds, but he did not think the »>nney would be refunded.
