READERS' VIEWS
(To the Editor.)
"Uncle Jim" writes: "It was with a feeling of indignation that I read of the proposed attempt to put a road through the glen in the Botanical Gardens. For fifty years I have watched the growth of the gardens and have enjoyed walking through the beautiful walks, where everything is clean and peaceful, and the noise and din of the city is not heard. The glen, where it is proposed to carry the road, is to my mind one of the beauty spots of the gardens, and it would be a lasting disgrace to do it. I strongly support Councillor Semple in his opposition to the scheme, and hope he will have the support of many others, and so prevent the work being carried out." "Fed-up" writes: "Until three years ago I lived in Melbourne, and scores of times had travelled on trams with suitcases, parcels, etc., without having a penny to pay on these articles. Now, in Wellington, I have been compelled to pay 3d on articles such as attache cases, parcels, etc. (whether small or large), with the result that if I have only one section to go I walk rather than hand this money over to the Corporation. This, however, I have found symbolical of Wellington, as from experience I have found it a city of high prices and* little return, and the result is that when writing to any friends in Australia I warn them against coming hpve."
