RAIN NEEDED
NEW SOUTH WALES CROPS
WEATHER TOO HOT AND DRY
PESTS AND DISEASE PREVALENT.
(United Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 2nd November, noon.)
SYDNEY, This Day.
Reports from the grain areas indicate a fairly satisfactory position as regards wheat and oat crops, but rain is badly needed in some districts in order to ensure the fulfilment of expectations. Early-sown crops have reached a stage where satisfactory yields can be reckoned upon, but the later sowings are less promising. Hot weather and a shortage of rain are together responsible for an early harvest. Heaping is proceeding in a few of the drier areas. Plant diseases and insect pests aro reported to be responsible for considerable damage.
The outlook in the potato-growing districts is generally not so satisfactory. Bain is badly, required to carry them over the critical stages. The present prospects for a heavy yield are not bright, but timely rain would greatly help to improve the position. Insect pests in some districts are retarding growth and causing much damage to potato fields.
