link: between town and coun--TRY.> \* -

An animated discussion on the wisdom of holding a stock show at the next Wellington Winter Show took place at a meeting of the Wellington Show Association last evening, when Mr. J. P. Kalaugher jubmitted a schedule of classes and .prizes in connection with the stock show. Mr. D. M'Gowan asked whether it had been definitely decided to hold the show. The chairman: "I can't say we have definitely decided upon it, but the tenor of the discussion at the annual meeting indicated that the proposal was looked upon favourably." Mr. M'Gowan asked Whether approximate losses on the stock shows in the past few years were availably. The secretary said that it was hard tqsay what the show brought in indirectly. He had been told, at, Carterton that the gtock show would be' successful eventually. It had the support of the country people, who looked to see stock when they came to Wellington. The quality in th^ past had been good, and it was only a question of time before the entries increased. a < The chairman considered that the show ■hould be representative and the animals high class- for a start. Mr. M'Gowan: "I am very sorry the figures will not be available. Personally, I don't think Wellington is suitable for Bueh a show." Mr. J, P. Kalaugher said that to cnt out the stock would ruin the show. He reminded members that 90 per cent, of the export valneof New Zealand came from primary products. Mr. G. Mitchell said that a Bhow must comprise 'a variety of- exhibits. -No one; knew exactly what drew the public to a show, and it was very hard to allocate a loss to any part of a big show. The stock, show wai. a'link between town and country, and he thought they should preserve that link, even though it cost a lot of money. _ Several other members spoke on the desirability of running a stock show, and a motion that the schedule be adopted was carried by a large majority.
