V.R.C. MEETING

RAMPION WINS THE DERBY.

(United Press Association.—Copyright.) MELBOURNE, 30th October. The weather, was boisterous, with light droits of rain, for tlio opening day of the Flemington races. There was a largo attendance, including the Governor-General and the Stato Governors. Several New Zealanders were present, also members of the Empire Parliamentary Delegation. Calrncross was sixth early In the Slaiden Race, and only won narrowly. The rider (Jones) and trainer (Fisher) also won this race last season, with King of Oude. Royal Feast finished fast in tho Marlbyrnong Plate, and scored brilliantly from the pacemaker Euston. M. M'Carten rode the winner, who cost 700 guineas as a yearling. In the Slelbourne Stakes Manfred was second early in the race, but ran to the front in the .straight, and won without being extended. This is his fourth successive win. Rampion was also prominent in the Derby, but was hard pushed to win from Heroic's brother Thracian. Limerick, finishing well, was a good third. Tho time is the second best for the race. This is Cracknell's first Victoria Derby mount. Rampion has now equalled Manfred's record by winning both Derbys. Results :— MAIDEN PLATE, of 5 soys each, with 500 soys added; one mile. A. S. Rampion went to the front at the start and led out of the straight from Epilogue, Thracian, and A'alalslan, with Limerick sixth, and Raron a bad last. At the ten furlongs Epilogue joined Rampion in the lead, the order of the others being much the same. Epilogue headed Rampion at the mile, with Thracian and Valaisian nearest of tho others. Including Limerick. KSron was still in the rear. At tho five furlongs Epilogue had a slight lead from Rampion, and then came Thracian and Limerick. Epilogue and Rampion were together in the straight, Limerick and Thracian next. The latter challenged the leader, but was beaten by three-quarters of a length. Limerick one •and a half lengths away. Raron wa3 fourth, then came Epilogue and Cromwell. Valaisian was last. Time, 2mln 32% sec. CANTALA STAKES, of 20 soys each, with 2000 soys added; one mile. W. Pearson's br g Amounis, by Magpie— Loved Ono, 4yrs, 9.8, inc. 101b penalty (J. Toohey) 1 A. G. Barlow's eh h Preposterer, by Absurd—First Class, syrs, 7.12 (A. Cooper) 2 Sol. It was a great race, Amounis finished strongly

and won brilliantly. This is his fourth win in the last flvo starts. HOTHAM HANDICAP, of 5 soys each, with 500 soys added; one mile and a half. J. Wren's br g Boedos, by Kandos—Bee Bee, syrs, 7.3 1 R. 11. Edkius's bo l'iastoon, by Piastre— Zaratoon, 4yrs, 7.12 2 H. Lewis's b h Our Prince, by Bachelor's Double—Painted Lady, aged, 7.8 ...... 3 Nino started. Spcarer was fourth. Won by two lengths, half a head between second and third. Time, 2min 33sec. Beedos was second last at the turn, but finished with a good run and won handsomely. He is engaged in the Melbourne Cup with 0.7.
