CLASSIFICATION OF SOILS
At the meeting of the geological section of the Wellington Philosophical Society, held in the Dominion Museum on Wednesday, Mr. M. Ongley being in the chair, a paper ivas read by Mr. H. T. Ferrar on soil classification and soil surveys. The speaker explained 'various methods of classifying soils. These were not all equally applicable, for soil surveys ivere usually undertaken with some special end in view. Illustrations were given, by means of lantern slides and maps, of a few soil surveys in progress in various parts of the world. The several independent soil surveys being carried out in New Zealand, each with a special end in A-iew, were then described. Tho Caivthron Institute is surveying Nelson Province, the Department of Agriculture is attacking the problem of iron-starvation of cattle, formerly called bush-sickness, Otago University has carried nut an iodine survey in its relation to goitre, and the speaker is engaged in a soil survey of irrigation areas in Central Otago.
