The bush 'fires' which are raging in the vicinity of Brisbane reached a climax when the city was encircled.by flames. The smoke was so thick that the sun at times, was almost obscured. Practically every range of hills and mountains within a radius of n"Ety miles is ablaze, lin many places the roads aro impassable owing to smoke and heat and fallen trees. The settlers had to fight hard to save their properties.
