A visitor to Berlin who wished to raise money on his wife's jewellery stuffed a string of 75 large pearls and a pearl and sapphire bracelet into his hip pocket before leaving his hotel, and then he went for a walk and called on a friend. On arrival at his1 friend's house he was dis j mayed to discover that the pearls irad the bracelet had slipped through a big hole in his pocket. He had unconsciously strewn £5000 worth o£ gems amid the slush of Berlin'streets. Six pearls in one of hia socks was all that remained of his treasure.
