The Acting-Primo Minister (the lion, W. Downie Stewart) returned to Wellington from Christchurch to-da}'.

The Minister of Education (the Hon. R. A. Wright) left to-day for the Auckland district. He will bo away from Wellington for a fortnight. Dr. A. Patcrson, of Christchurch, who has been attending the International Dental Congress at Philadelphia, returned by the Niagara on Monday. The Rev.' Joseph W. Kemp, minister in. charge of the Auckland Baptist Tabernacle, returned by tho Niagara on Monday after a seven months' holiday trip to Great Britain and America. The death occurred at Stratford last night of Mr. Arthur E. Copping, who held the post of editor of the. Stratford "Evening Post" from 1904 till his retirement in October last, states a Press Association message. At the Harbour Board offices yesterday, a presentation was made to Mr. Harry Charles, officer in charge of the Ferry Wharf, on the occasion of his approaching marriage. The presentation, which was made by Captain Monro, traffic manager, consisted of a valuable clock and a silver perfume bottle. Captain Monro, on behalf of the staff, expressed appreciation of the many good | qualities of the recipient, and wished him happiness and prosperity. j On Sunday last Mr. Robert Parker began his 49th year of soryico as organist and choirmaster of St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral. At the evening service a large part of Mendelssohn's oratorio, "St. Paul," was admirably sung by the choir, with the valuable help of Mr. John Prouse, who sang the part of the Apostle with unfailing power and- dignity. The accompaniments were played on the pianoforte and organ by Mrs. F. Steers and Mr. Parker. A memorial to the late Hon. K. K. Simpson, a former Legislative Councillor, was unveiled at.Bonny Glen, Marton, on Sunday afternoon. Speaking at the ceremony, the Hon. E. Newman, ; M.L.C., expressed appreciation of the public .services performed by the late [ Mr. Simpson, who had done much valuable work on local bodies in the Rangitikoi district. The late gentleman, he said, had left the^ Legislative Council esteemed and respected for the qualities which went to make an efficient Legislative Councillor. The death of Albert ("Towny") Martin, well known in Auckland football aud athletic..circles, at the. age of 60 years, occurred on Tuesday, reports "The Post's" special correspondent. The late Mr. Martin was engaged at the Waitekauri goldfields about 1897, when the boom period was at its t height, and he took a prominent part in Bugby football, affairs in that district. Later he removed to Auckland, where he was identified with the old Waitemata Swimming Club and the old City Eugby Football Club. Tho funeral took place yesterday, when representatives of tho Auckland Eugby Union and other athletic sports bodies attended.
