FIRMNESS MAINTAINED,

(United Pres? Association.—Copyright.! (Received 17th September, 11 a.m.) LONDON, 16th September. At the wool sales (fifth series) there was an excellent selection, with animated competition. The firmness shown at the opening of the series was well maintained. Continental buyers took prnctically all tho: merinos, and a large proportion of the* crossbreds, out-bidding Bradford, who had to bo content with slipes and some scoured crossbreds. New Zealand brands realised:— WMECO, 27d; Dunedin, 23d.

Of tho 198,000 bales available for the fifth series, Now Zealand contributed 86,000, Australia 70,000, South America 22,000.

This information is contained in a cablegram (dated 15th September) received by tho Department of Agriculture from the High Commissioner, who also comments as follows, on the proceedings of the opening day (Tuesday): "General and active demand and prices have advanced all round. Compared with last closing rates, merino and fine crossbred 5 per cent., medium and coarse crossbred 7J per cent, to 10 per cent, dearer."
