SCHOOL COMMITTEES

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION,

The monthly meeting of the Wellington School Committees' Association was held last night. Mr. A. Parlane presided. The Terrace School Committee, having notified its affiliation with the association, was represented by Messrs. Johnson and Bloxham.

Mr. W. Sadd was congratulated by tho chairman on being elected to represent the school committees on the Technical College Board.

It was decided to ask Mr. Sando to represent the school committees on the committee to be set up to consider the school curriculum. In the event of Mr. Sando being unable to accept, Mr. L. Hennessy was recommended for the position.

A letter was read from the Minister of Education, in reply to the representations of the association, regarding the frequent transfer of teachers. The Minister said that he recognised that the aim should be as great a degree of permanency as possible in teaching staffs. He was assured that the alteration in the law had resulted in a substantial reduction in staff changes. Tho filling of vacancies during the year by means of relieving teachers was not favoured either by head-teach-ers or inspectors. He had already had two suggestions made to Mm'that he could examine during the recess, and if one proved reasonable and practicable it would be adopted.

Mr. Sadd urged that the executive be asked to inquire as to how the provision for free school books would effect indigent children. The chairman said that inquiries would be made, and the result would bo1 reported at the next meeting. Mr. O 'Halloran moved, and Mr. Sadd seconded, a motion opposing the introduction of Bible-reading in the State schools. A motion that the discussion be postponed sine die was carried by 12 votes to 10.

Mr. Pirani spoke on educational matters, and was extended a hearty vote of thanks for iis address.
