MAIN HIGHWAYS
INCREASE IN CONTRIBUTIONS.
An amendment of the Main Highways Act, introduced by GovernorGeneral's Message in the House of Eeprosentativea early this morning, states that tho Main Highways Board may, out of its Revenue Fund, advance moneys to local authorities to provide a proportion of the cost of construction of main highways. The total amount advanced to all local authorities is not to exceed £50,000 at any one time, and the moneys are to bo repaid by instalments over a period not exceeding ten years, the rate of interest to be determined by the Minister of Finance.
The Bill extends the authority of the Board to contribute towards the cost of maintenance of streets to cases where bridges are not less than 300 ft in length. The board is also authorised to increase from ono-half to three-fifths the amount of a contribution towards the cost of general maintenance of a main highway. This limit, however, shall not apply where special circumstances justify the board making a larger contribution.
Clause 6 of the Bill preserves the benefit of contributions payable from the Main Highways Account in respect of roads ana* streets subject to the Wellington City and Suburban Highways Construction and Hutt Road Amendment Act, 1924.
