NELSON, 27th August.

An interesting illustrated lecture on "Micro-organisms and Soil Fertility" was given by Mr. William C. Da vies at the monthly meeting of the Nelson Philosophical Society on Wednesday evening. At a meeting of the recently-elected Nelson Advisory Soard to the Fruitgrowers' Federation, there were present Messrs. Brash, Brown, Salmond, Haining, Stephens, and Rowling. Mr. Haining was elected chairman of the board, and Mr. Stephens vice-chairman. It was decided to solicit the assistance tf Messrs. Atmorc and Hudson, M.P.'s, towards securing an amendment of the Fruit Control Bill tins session providing for 60 per cent, of those who vote to carry a poll instead of 60 per cent, of those on the roll. , The Overseas Shipping Committee having expressed its willingness to load fruit at Nelson Wharf if facilities are provided, it was decided to co-oper.ate with the Nelson Harbour Board in this connection with a view to increasing the shed accommodation at Nelson and Mapua and generally increasing the facilities for dealing with export fruit. The Motueka Harbour Board will also be approached regarding export facilities. ■

Bishop Kempthorne, of Polynesia, son of Archdeacon Kempthorne, is expected xv arrive in Nelson on Saturday, morning. The foundation stone of .n new Masonic temple at Murchison was laid on Saturday afternoon last. The Right Wor. Bro. A. G. Shrimpton,. Pro. G.M., for Nelson, and Marlborough. conducted the ceremony, and was assisted by P.P.G.M.'s R. W. Stiles and R. F. Fupiess, P.M.'s,. H. H. Edwards, A. S. Dn.vies, and J. Morgan, with the Rev. W. Hall, of Motupiko, acting as grand chaplain, and Bro. J. L, Ching, P. Sen. G.D.. as Director of Ceremonies. The contractor for the building, Mr. A. J. Pellew, presented the P.G.M. with a silver trowel.

The Cawthron Trust Board has invited Mr. J. T. Ward, Director of the Wanganui Observatory, to deliver the 1926 Cawthron lecture next month. Th subject will be "Recent Advances in Astronomical Research." . ' '
