SPEED AND DEATH

MOTOB BACES AT BOULOGNE,

(United Press Association. —Copyright.) (Beuter'i Telegram.)

PABIS, 26th August.

The motor-car race meeting at Boulogne opened disastrously. The famous Brooklands rider, Howey, an Australian, during a hill test failed to take the second bend, and his car dashed into the spectators. It killed one, broke a gendarme's leg, and cut oft* the leg of a spectator. Howey was killed instantly.

Earlier in the day Seagrave, another competitor, established a remarkable feat in tho history of road-racing. Over six kilometres of hilly ground he maintained the staggering speed of 147 miles an hour. Traversing the hilltop the machine left the ground, rushed through the air for twenty yards, and came down with a bump, almost flinging Seagrave out of the car. He covered the distance in 85 3-ssec, a world's record. He had a flying start.
