COOKS AND STEWARDS
COASTAL WORK.
Conditions under which members of the I Federated Cooks and Stewards of New Zealand Industrial Association of Workers should be called upon to work were discussed by their representatives before jthe Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. W. Newton) yesterday with representatives of the Anchor Shipping and Foundry Co., Ltd., of Nelson, and other shipping companies. The workers were represented by Messrs. W. Cape, J. Farrell, E. Kennedy, P. Parry, and W. Walsh, while the representatives of the employers were Messrs. W. E. Fuller, B. L. Hammond, Holm, P. A. Petersen, E. J. Phillips, and W. Rogers.
It'was agreed that in vessels arriving on Sundays or holidays, overtime should be paid after 9 a.m., or half an hour after arrival, whichever is the later.
Minimum payment rates, and employers' claims in cases where a vessel arrives and leaves on the same day, were referred to the Arbitration Court.-
It was agreed that a day off ashore at their home port should be granted within a month in the case of a vessel arriving in port later than 8 a.m. on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Day, Good Friday^ Easter Monday, King's Birthday, or Labour Day, or an extra day's sea-pay. Provisions regarding payment on discharge and accommodation were agreed to. The period of service which the worker must complete before being entitled to a proportion of the annual holiday proved an obstacle to a complete agreement in regard to annual holidays, which question was referred to the Arbitration Court.
The rates of wages to be paid to workers "working by" a' ship after signing off articles and before signing up, wcro referred to the Court.
The majority of the remaining clauses discussed were referred to tho Court, where they differed from the old award.
