CIVIC LEAGUE AND CANDIDATES

(To tha Editor.)

Sir, —In your columns last evening yon gave us the text of a resolution passed by the council of the Civic League, viz.,

That it bo an instruction to the executive to form a small committee to discuss the question of candidates for the forthcoming City Council elections, and endeavour to obtain suitable men who will represent the city, and who will be able to devote their time to the city in tho interests of the ratepayers as a whole. I was hoping, Sir, that the Civic League would have seen the "error of its ways," and come to a decision to leave the choice of candidates for council honours to the electors. It is qiiito well known —to ratepayers especially—how the nominees of the Civic League have handled civic affairs during the past few years. We have not yet forgotten the "Northland Tunnel," the delay, in connection with the "new main from Wainui," the absurd tangle over the "Hill street tram," and their indecision over the Mount Victoria tunnel. Perhaps it would be wise for the league m future to give someone else a chance at "nominating." ilt is just possible if this were done we may have a council representative of the whole city—not of only the north and western portion of it—in the vicinity of Hill strot and the Northland tunnel.

Are you aware, Sir, that there is not more than one (or at the most, two) representatives on the council to look after that vast area south and east of Cuba street. Surely _ such large districts as Te Aro, Newtowu, Berhampore, . Melrosc, Vogeltown, Island Bay, and Lyall B»' possess ono or more men capable of catchim? the eyes of the electors —if not that of the Civic League. Let us (jive it it trial at any rate, and I trust tho huge body of electors in the districts mentioned will say "so say all of us."—l

am, etc.,
