NELSON, 25th August.
The executive of the Nelson Provincial Progress League held a meeting this morning. Among correspondence was a letter from the Public Works Department stating that the league's objection to the Waimea County Council's proposed classification of roads -would receive careful consideration. It ivas stated that the classification of roads did not necessarily mean that the roads were absolutely closed to motor-lorries of a greater weight than the classified rate, but it did mean that it was necessary for the owner of any such lorry to obtain permission of the controlling authority. A resolution was carried that the Main Highways Board be urged to treat the Wangamoa-Rai Valley road a3 an exceptional case, and put the road in such order that it would be unnecessary for the local body to close it for heavy traffic during the winter months. The league endorsed the application already made for the expenditure of £1000 for benching the corners and making them reasonably safe. The secretary of the Nelson Acclimatisation Society wrote regarding the scarcity of fish in the Motueka River. Ho stated that the society would co-operate with anglers in the district to improve matters. The secretary was instructed to interview the Public Works engineer urging that the work on the Kbtoiti road be completed as early as possible.
It was resolved that various organisations be written to asking what quantity of produce and stock was likely to be sent through by the proposed motor service linking up with the railheads. ilr. Gibbs said that £30,000 was on tho estimates for the Glenhope-Murchison railway last year, and £23,346 was expended. For the TVestport-Inangahua line £27,000 was voted, and £18,606 was expended. After discussion it was resolved that the league having noted the suggestion in the Public Works Statement that in view of the development of motor traffic the further prosecution of the Nelson-Murchison railway might perhaps be abandoned, would strongly urge upon the Government that the absence of engineering difficulties between the present railhead and Murchison and the importance of the latter township and the surrounding district, made it highly desirable that the railway Bhould be carried at least to Murchison, as expeditiously as possible. The league considered that the £30,000 voted this year for the lint' inadequate to expeditiously complete the railway^to Murchison. It was "decided to urge upon the Post and Telegraph Department to increase the attendances at the Nelson Telephone Exchange during night hours, and to put in another switch board to allow of new subscribers being connected without delay. After a short discussion on a hydroelectric scheme for the province it was resolved that the Government be asked to forward a report-made some years ago concerning the possibilities of the Upper Motueka Valley as a source of supply. Bunting was (lying from the vessels in port today in honour of the marriage in London this morning of Miss Dorothy Rogers, daughter of Mr. m ■, Rogers, manager of the Anchor Shipping Company. Mr. T. Louisson lias been appointed hon. treasurer to the Nelson Trotting Club in place of the late Mr. E. Edwards.
