HARBOUR BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING,
A meeting of the Wellington Harbour Board was held on Wednesday. Present: —Messrs. M. Cohen (chairman), G. Mitchell, H. D. Bennett, D. J. M'Gowan, J. G. Cobbe, and Captain M'Arthur.
An additional bylaw in respect to wharfage on artificial manures, as approved by the board on 28th July, was adopted and passed. The new charges will be: —Hides, loose, each Id; artificial manures, per ton, Is 3d. A letter of appreciation of the action of the board in reducing the charge on artificial manures if loaded direct into railway trucks was received from the Director-General of Agriculture.
Payments were authorised as follows:—Accounts, interest, claims, salaries, and wages, £48,006; progress payments on contracts, £2000. The chairman said that tho amount on fixed deposit had been increased by £15,000, and now stood at £80,000.
It was agreed that, as recommended by the general manager, coal-bins be provided to four additional cranes on the railway wharf, and that a charge of Is 6d per bin per hour be made to the shipping companies using them.
The chairman read a statement of shipping and cargo statistics for the month of July, 1926, as compared with June of last year. The main figures, with last year's in parentheses, are:— No* registered tonnage of trading vessels arriving, 256,195 tons (217,803); general cargo imports from British and foreign ports, 16,290 tons (29,653); general cargo exports: to British and foreign ports, 4776 tons (4480), to coastal and intercolonial porti 11,611 tons (11,976); cheese, ex store and rail and transhipped, 1698 tons (989); frozen meat, 2408 tons (2129).
