PROBATION REFUSED
DISHONEST TOWN CLERK.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
INVERCAKGILL, This Day. "If a thief desires to obtain probation he should approach the Court in a proper spirit of penitence," said Mr. Justice Sim in sentencing John P. "Walsh, ex-Town Clerk of Mataura, to three years' reformative detention for thofi of borovgh funds, "He has not done that. He has had the impudence to deny his guilt, and has gone into the box and committed perjury in support of his defence, and also mado a most unfounded suggestion against a young lady employed in his office. If tho accused had shown a proper spirit and had pleaded guilfy I would have been glad to consider tho recommendation of the Probation Officer, but in tho circumstances tho prisoner, by his illadvised course in defending tho case, has placed himself boyond consideration in connection with probation.'^
