LOCAL ELECTIONS.
The Local Elections and Polls Amendment Bill was read a second time in the House of Representatives last night.
The Minister of Internal Affairi (the Hon. R. P. Bollard) explained that the principal sections had been asked for by the Counties' Association and local bodies. Thero was a clause giving local bodies more time' in which to prepare for elections. The system of marking a cross against the name of candidates was substituted by the system of crossing out candidate for whom it was not desired to vote.
Mr. M. J. Savage (Auckland West) said that it was desirable' that they should have a uniform system of voting. If there was no uniformity, they would always have a lot of informalities.
Mr. T. W. Ehodes (Thames) warmly commended the Bill, especially those sections dealing with the system of voting.
Mr. G. W. Forbes (Hurunui) asked if provision could not be made for absentee voters in local elections.
A word for hospital patients was put in by Mr. J. A. Nash (Palmerston North).
The Minister stated that the doctors did not favour giving hospital patients the right to vote. The Government was looking into the question of absentee voters, and, if possible, an amendment would be included in the Bill in Committee.
The Bill was read a second time.
