LYALL BAY AFFAIRS

PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION,

Tho monthly executive meeting of the Lyall Bay Progressive Association was held last week, Mr. J. W. Bur-goync-Thomas presiding over a good attendance of members. A. discussion took place concerning tho proposals of the Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in regard to several matters affecting the Wellington Zoo, and the secretary was instructed to reply that the committee appreciates the interest the society has taken in the existing conditions at the Zoo, but did not see any good reason for changing tho site, as the principal trouble arose from lack of funds. The committee suggested that collecting boxes bo provided at the entrances for voluntary subscriptions, and that special efforts be made to secure a substantial voluntary collection on Sundays. It was also decided to point out that tho City Council ws alive to the existing conditions, and was making every effort to improve them. ' Important improvements were about to be carried out by the council for the better housing of the larger animals.

Members were gratified to learn that at last a start was to be made on the Queen's drive improvements, and representation is being made to the council to got the' original scheme carried out, instead of the very modified one at present intended.

On the motion of Mr. Cairns, it was decided to refer to tho Civic League the matter of the erection of dwellings without first obtaining a permit from the City Council on sections which do not allow of sufficient frontage.

The secretary reported that £153 Gs was in tho hands of the treasurer, Mr. 1". j; Evans, for the "Lyall Bay Bell" for tho Wellington War Memorial Carillon. As soon as air lists could be closed a detailed statement of subscribers and collectors would be published. On the motion of the president, it was decided to hand a cheque to the treasurer of the Carillon Society for the amount of cash in hand.
