ELECTRICAL WIREMEN
EEGISTEATION AMENDMENT BILL.
The Electrical Wiremcn's Eegistration Amendment Bill was read a second time in the House of Eepresentatives on Tuesday-. In moving the second reading, the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. K. S. Williams) said 'that tho principal clause aimed to do away with certain difficulties which had arisen as a result of the granting of provisional licenses.
Mr. D. G. Sullivan (Avon) stressed the need for ensuring that only competent men should secure temporary licenses, and he thought that provision should bo made in the Bill in that direction.
Sir John Luke (Wellington North) did not agree with the last speaker that there was anything to fear from the operation of the existing Act.
Allusion to the fact that members had had very little time to consider tho Bill was made by Mr. H. T. Armstrong (Christchurch East), who said that it wa3 proposed to rush through what was actually a vital amendment.
Mr. E. M'Keen (Wellington South) expressed the view that the amendment would weaken the operation of the original Act. There was a fear that men who were not qualified would be able to work as electrical wircmen.
In reply, the Minister said that neither ho nor his Department desired to weaken tho Bill, and in view of tho remarks which had been made he would be pleasod to consider the whole matter before it went to the Committee stage. The Bill was read a second time.
