NO LIGHTS WANTED

HUTT ROAD BETTER WITHOUT THEM.

A proposal made by letter from the Petone Borough Council to the City and Suburban Highways Board to-day that the Hutt road should be lit between Kaiwarra and Koro Koro —there are already lights as far as Kaiwarra—did' not meet with any support, and after brief discussion was placed upon the file, marked "Received." ' The motorists' representative, Mr. o. tr. Nathan, said that drivers did not want lights, which ou dark and wet nights were nothing short of a nuisance, and as the road was not used by pedestrians, pedestrians did,not want them either.

The Mayor o£ Upper Hutt, Mr. A. J. M'Curdy, agreed with Mr. Nathan, and remarked that in his borough it would probably bo necessary to shift certain of the lights owing to the difficulty motorists found on bad nights of picking, up pedestrians crossing the- roadway. Councillor H. D. Bennett then brought up the question of footpaths at Upper Hutt, for as everyone appeai'ed to walk along the roadway there was serious dan-' ger of accident. Footpaths were to be constructed at Upper Hutt, said Mr. M'Curdy, and that danger would be removed. Upper Hutt people, he remarked, had been so long without a decent surface to walk upon that they just could not resist the temptation of taking out the baby on Sunday afernoons when a smooth surface was available. Up there they did not call it "jay. walking," it was promenading; but' he did admit it was dangerous.
